After the NING group was founded I had the feeling that this caused a brain drain and all the people went there. But there was not much discussion before on this blog. May be mail artists prefer to glue than to discuss?
That seems to be the case. On NING the discussions take place, but only on a basic scale....
Yeah, "basic" is a good word. May be, for most people mail art is a doing, not that much a theoretical thing. That is okay, but ... BTW: Was Ray Johnson a theory person?
And may be, this "everything works - no jury" is something that kills discussion on the topic?
Just my not very deep reflected thoughts.
Oh, one more point: I answered to some questions, started some threads. But the missing echo was a bit discouraging.
But may be we could change it? (uh, this is comment #4 in this thread!).

Ray Johnson did work from several very complex concepts. His "Book of Death" concept was explored by Bill Wilson who published a complete book about it. Theory is done by the researchers, not by the mail-artists I guess.
"No jury" is a thing highly valued in Mail-Art. In the concept of mail-art there is no 'good' or 'bad' mail-art. Looking at concepts of projects and the results in the form of artifacts after the mail-art projects have taken place there is a big difference. Even Mail-Artists speak of good and bad, good catalogue, bad catalogue. New concept or a re-make of an concept.
So, are mail-artist ready to analyze what they do, what has been done. We will see.

As someone who regularly checks this site for mailart callouts, but is not a participant in the site, when I do try to submit comments, they often don't get through. (Eg. The current labelling of Broken Pencil on the latest entry as American is incorrect - Broken Pencil is a Canadian magazine! But my comment to point this out got blocked.) I'm not sure if it's an issue with the 'identity' that I choose when attempting to comment.
Hey Ruud, I think now a days that most people just don't have the time to sit down and comment and read through all these blogs. I'm skeptical of even keeping up the one I just put up for us American artists (USA Mail Artists on IUOMA) because people barely have time to post to their own blogs. Not everyone in the network is similar in age and some people have super busy jobs or kids, etc and there's only so many hrs in the day. I love to stop by here and read but I have a hard time jumping around reading everyone's blogs, it's almost TOO MUCH information. I'd rather a listing of mail art calls, mail artists' addresses like we have on NIng and just check in when I can. Thanks!
